One of the primary functions of Science Fiction is to allow an outside perspective of humanity to be formed. If self evaluations are usually deemed difficult, then introspective observations regarding not only human history but also nature must require even more profound thinking. Because of this inherent difficulty, to look upon ourselves we must change the context of the question. To evaluate the consequences of today’s environment trends, imagine a group of people who are forced to flee earth because of long term abuse of nature. This hypothetical takes place in a time only a hundred years from now so culture and technology would, for the most part, be similar to the present but divergent in a few key ways. An author like Robert J. Sawyer could simultaneously show the error of thoughtless geological destruction while showing the social responses that would result usingĀ Hominids. Ponter Boddit’s revulsion to many of humanities most monumental mistakes shows a drastically different version of the way we could have, or arguably should have been. Many readers would refuse to pick up a book exclusively about statistics and scientific testimony regarding global warming but disguise those with an interesting plot or compellingly realistic characters and the masses not only receive your beliefs but also become advocates for change. The average person is unable to understand such trying concepts as gradual planetary destabilization but write about a post-apocalyptic man coming to grips with loss as he searches desperately for some other surviving remnants of a long gone western civilization and the book flies off the shelves. Talk of movie deals starts to spread. The problems outlined in SyFy novels have undoubtedly larger reader bases than stuffy scientific journals. Ironically, some individuals are more likely to be aware of the political unrest in Marvel Comic’s fictions nation of Wakanda than that of Syria. It is easier to look at the world through the lens of imagination than that of brutal truth. The depressing reality is that we would rather ignore the gritty underworld as if it doesn’t exist, so an effective way to shed light on the most prevalent of dilemmas is through art.
