For my mini exhibition I chose to focus on the motif of distance. In Metamorphosis, Gregor feels both a physical and mental distance from his family and the world. He physically cannot get close to his family, especially his mother, and he feels like he will never belong in the world again. He grew to understand the distance that existed when he finally accepted his fate. These photos represent this idea of distance through the view from which the photos were taken. I believe this exhibition captures the idea of Gregor’s trapped mind and body because the gap that continues to lengthen throughout the story between him and everyone else conveys his struggle to escape. Although Gregor still feels close to his family in the sense that he still loves and cares for them, he knows his relationships will never be the same. By exploring the idea of distance and how it relates to Gregor, we as both readers and viewers can come to understand how difficult it is to accept the separation that may exist in our lives.

I like the theme that you explored, there is a certain distance that Gregor cannot overcome because of his transformation. In both physical because he’s locked away in his room and unable to move past his door, and mental because his parents refuse to accommodate his change into their lives. Without trying to understand him, they isolated him to just his own thoughts. I think this distance between Gregor and his family existed even before his transformation too, because him and his family were at two different ends of a deal. He the one to provide money, and them the ones to receive the money. So from two different mindsets, perhaps Gregor and his family were unable to connect in the first place.
