Prospect Park, an urban park in Brooklyn, New York, was created in the1860s as a place for social congregating and for admiring nature. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux were responsible for designing Prospect Park and Central Park, and today Prospect Park is maintained by the Prospect Park Alliance, a nonprofit organization formed in 1987. Prospect Park is home to about 10 million visitors each year. Many diverse peoples utilize the park today, for different purposes including leisure, and exercise (such as “running, walking, inline skating, and cycling” [Krenichyn, 2006] on the paved roads of the park, or using the openfields for football or soccer games). Our seminar 3 class decided to find out whether this diversity in peoples and activities is apparent in the types of trash found in Prospect Park. By examining the park and observing the people in it, as well as noting the “artifacts” we found along the way, we got a feel for the types of people gathering in the park (relating to sex, age, and ethnicity), and whether these people were particularly educated about garbage disposal.
