The Restaurant Ratings system has been the center of controversy ever since it was implemented by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. These confusing letter grades, now ubiquitous in the city, represent much more than meets the eye. Even if a restaurant does have an “A” grade, it does not mean that it is sanitary. Through our data sets, we have found that these restaurant grades represent much more, or less, than meets the eye. Unfortunately, “[T]he prevalence of foodborne illness from restaurant consumption, however, is extraordinarily difficult to measure.” (Ho, 2012) No matter what statistics and studies we see, we can never be fully sure about the efficacy of the restaurant grading system and its outcomes, health wise.
