Meet The Artist Event - Thomas Neff

On Thursday September 24th, 2009, I exited my last class and met up with a few friends for a trip to meet a photographer by the name of Thomas Neff. The trip was a disaster before we even arrived at the Macaulay building. We were stuck on the 1 train for nearly 10 minutes! Eventually, we made it to the building. After we got seated, Thomas Neff was introduced. He stated how he was a volunteer photographer who went around taking pictures because he wanted to, not because it was his job. His presentation were photos of the disaster of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. I consider myself very lucky. A few days prior to the hurricane, I was actually in New Orleans taking part in a table tennis tournament. It was very devastating to me to see the amounts of people that lost their homes and suffered throughout the whole event. Going back to Thomas Neff, Neff went to New Orleans and took many photos of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He talked to victims of the hurricane and took the picture. Many photos were shocking to me because of the story that he told about the photo. One particular photo that shocked me was a picture of an ordinary woman and ordinary man. The story that he told about the picture was that the ordinary man killed the woman in a room and left her remains in there for police to find after he committed suicide by jumping off a building. That was the most shocking photo because Thomas Neff actually met and spoke to these people. I could've sort of feel the pain that the people in New Orleans were feeling within the photos. Thomas Neff did a good job explaining his photos. Overall, I think he gave us a good feel of what he goes through every time he takes a photo of a tragic event.
