A Perfectionist’s Masterpiece

“Blind Mouth Singing” under Ruben Polendo’s direction, is a theatrical experience that truly intrigues the mind. He successfully shares the story of a dysfunctional family with all its secrets and problems. Reiderico, played by Jon Norman Schneider, faces a psychological problem with his fascination and obsession with the boy in the well, Lucero. At the same time, the Mother of the Late Afternoon attempts to keep her family under her control, petrified of change. Finally, Bolivia, struggles in keeping her secret identity and mischievous Gordi proves his manhood through cruelty and his ultimate betrayal to his brother.

While the average person watches this show simply for its visual and auditory appeal, it takes much more than what is seen by the naked eye. A performance like this requires an immense amount of time, effort, and planning. From funding, to rehearsals, and stage theatrics, you would think you needed a crew of one hundred people. In all the sweat and preparation, Polendo reveals his perfectionist work ethic because every movement, word, and facial expression was pre-planned. Having 900 sound cues just within this one show demonstrates how there could be absolutely no improvisation or surprises. This meticulous focus is also shown in the construction of the well, which was an art all on its own. The mere transformation of its typical vertical structure into a horizontal layout was genius. The audience could see the water moving and the interaction between Reiderico and Lucero. Another plus was that the character’s reflection could be seen on the water, which added to the eerie mood.

So, the truth is that running a show demands tremendous work for both the cast and crew. Yet with proper planning and dedication, the end result is worth every second of it. This is proven true in Polendo’s masterpiece of “Blind Mouth Singing”, which is one that will stay etched in our minds.
