It is a shame that the exhibit, “Between Language and Geography: Words, Signs and Symbols in Photography,” was limited to only fourteen photographers and approximately thirty photographs.

What comes to mind when you think Broadway? Lights, crazy costumes and set? Spring Awakening broke that stereotype with their simple set, mild costumes, and rock music.
Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, Springs Awakening, this show features an introverted society and its teenagers’ sexual torment. The producers creatively use rock music to portray the inner thoughts of the characters. In the midst of a scene, the spotlight is thrown on the singer, belting out his or her frustration, while the other actors are in a stationary position. This humorous portrayal of repression only adds to the numerous reasons why this show has earned eight Tony Awards, along with innovation and creativity.

Freedman explained the process of reconciling not only the roadblock of the writer’s split brain, torn between emotion and craft, but the conflict of mixing up the different elements of a traditional memoir as well. How many accents can one man sputter? Dan Hoyle proves that the answer is many, as he imitates Scottish, Japanese, Texan, and most impressive of all, quite a few different versions of Pidgin English. The play robustly portrays images of life (and more frequently) kidnappings and death in a war-ridden Niger Delta. Although Hoyle’s one man performance is unarguably entertaining, it becomes a distraction in comprehending the seriousness of the subject matter. (more…)

A Play for all to See
Tings Dey Happen. The very name brings all to ask: What actually does happen? Well, the answer can be found at 55 Mercer Street, where a whole new perspective on life is waiting to unfold. Dan Hoyle, the writer of the play, reveals the truth about oil politics in Nigeria, and the constant tension between the lower class workers and the upper class tyrants, who steal all the oil money for themselves. This strain is not common knowledge to the public, and therefore is drilled into the audience by the sole actor, Dan Doyle, himself, during the show. (more…)
