Rocking It Out
What comes to mind when you think Broadway? Lights, crazy costumes and set? Spring Awakening broke that stereotype with their simple set, mild costumes, and rock music.
Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, Springs Awakening, this show features an introverted society and its teenagers’ sexual torment. The producers creatively use rock music to portray the inner thoughts of the characters. In the midst of a scene, the spotlight is thrown on the singer, belting out his or her frustration, while the other actors are in a stationary position. This humorous portrayal of repression only adds to the numerous reasons why this show has earned eight Tony Awards, along with innovation and creativity.
