WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT DOMINICAN IMMIGRANTS IN NYC?



  • Largest foreign born group in NYC
  • Reside primarily in Washington Heights and the Bronx
  • Low Educational Attainment
    • “The overall educational attainment of Dominicans in the United States is among the lowest in the country,” (The Dominican Studies Institute at City College 2000).
    • 43.8% graduate from high school and 10.6% from college
  • Low Linguistic Attainment:
    • 70% of Dominicans are NOT English Proficient
  • High poverty and unemployment rates (I.E. Low Job Attainment)
    • 8.9% for men and 13.1% for women (unemployment)
    • Highest foreign born poverty rate of 30.9% in NYC
    • Limited manufacturing jobs in NYC and limited skill sets among Dominican workers
