From The Integration of Dominican, Chinese, Russian and Mexican Immigrants in NYC

My name is Debbie Wong and I am a fusion of Chinese and American, hence my title Chinese-American. I am a first generation American of two Chinese parents who came to America to pursue better lives and earn better income. Being the child of Chinese parents, and living in a diverse community that encourages the use of English, has had its ups and downs. English has become my default language and Chinese has faded away in the background. However, I maintain a balance between the two worlds by speaking to my parents about Chinese culture and learning about American culture through my encounters and experiences. Integrating into America has been difficult for my parents but after many years of learning and growing, they have become assimilated into the American culture and still maintain their Chinese roots.
