FINAL PROJECT TIPS

Feel free to add useful tips for your classmates. I have placed some useful ideas and resources.

  • TIME: Try to keep videos under 10 minutes so you will be able to share them during the MHC-wide end of term presentations.
  • EXAMPLES: For examples of previous MHC student videos, I suggest looking at Professor Napoli's 2009 Seminar III website made with guidance from ITF John Sorrentino.

Fair Use

  • Attribution: Always give credit for someone else's work whenever available. Origins of music, photos, and video should include URL and date found at a minimum.
  • Clip length: Music and video clips should be less than 30 seconds in length. Otherwise youtube or music companies may strip/block your work.
  • Background music: Check out websites offering podsafe music! Start by looking at the Creative Commons Legal Music for Videos page.

Applications

Flip Video

Become the next coppola and shoot your own film footage with your handy dandy Flip Cam. To download:

  • Connect your flip and open the flipvideo icon on your desktop.
  • Drag the "flip for macs" folder to your desktop and open program.
  • Look through your footage. Clips you like should be "saved to computer" using the flip save options with a name you'll remember. You can also save stills from your video footage.
  • Open iMovie, file>import>movies and then search by name.
  • Now flip clip is available as a new iMovie event - ready to edit/corporate into your project.
  • If you want to remove the flipvideo background noise recorded while you shot, click on the cog icon (bottom left corner of clip) and make "audio adjustments." Moving the audio volume to the left (0%) will drop out the noise.

NOT WORKING? Try uploading the videos to iphoto first...counter intuitive but it might work.

iMovie

  • Think about incorporating both video and still images into your film. We encourage using your own, original footage whenever possible.
  • If you must use found footage - ITFs suggest keepvid or mozilla's download helper to save and edit videos found on the web (i.e. youtube).
  • Storyboard your ideas. How will you contextualize your project? Organize main points? Visualize argument?
  • Narration: add talking points and to your film by clicking on the microphone icon to add voice over content.
  • Title slides: an easy way to identify interviewees, the origin of video or music clips, and provide photo credits. Look for the "T" icon in iMovie for titling options.
  • Section transitions: Need to visually cue audience that you are moving on to a new point/theme? Use the various slide transitions.
  • Apple has very useful tutorials...iMovie support site

iPhoto

  • Photos imported into iphoto can be edited and then exported into imovie.
  • Slides from powerpoint can be saved as .jpg files and imported as well

Screenshot via Preview

  • Through your mac's Preview feature you can take screenshots of all/part of any application window open.
  • Crop and save to desktop.
  • Saved as .jpg files, screenshots can be placed into powerpoint presentations or imported into iphoto.

UMapper and Googlemaps

  • Either applications allows you to easily create and name points, regions, and routes.
  • UMapper allows you to upload any image (I suggest .jpg extension) as a base map.
  • You can choose to embed your maps into the wiki, create a link to your maps, or take a screenshot (see above).

Exporting

To export your completed iMovie into your team's wiki page: Share>Export movie>youtube

  • Youtube account: MacaulayITFs; Password: Email Meredith
  • Once uploaded and processed on youtube, embed into the wiki!

Group Dynamics

Working well as a group? Wonderful! Are tasks clearly delineated for each group member? Need strategies to encourage a group member who is not pulling his/her weight? Feel free to send Meredith or Prof. Elston an email. We'll be happy to brainstorm solutions.

Test film

A test film integrating video, photo stills, and a screen shot of a google map.

  • I intentionally left the background conversation in the film in the beginning to point out how awful it is! Don't forget to split flipvideo image and sound!
  • This is the 640x385 embed size
