We are a class of students at the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College.  The title of the class is “The Peopling of New York,” and our objective was to study the various aspects of immigrant life and immigration to New York City listed below for both Eastern European Jewish and Mexican immigrants.  This website combines the research and work done by our class.  Because the Jewish population came overseas in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century and Mexican immigration is recent and ongoing, we hoped that by studying these two groups we could learn at least a part of what made up New York in the past, and what is shaping the city around us today.
