Richmond HillFrom The Peopling of New York City: Indian CommunitiesRichmond Hill in southwest Queens is the home to many north Indian Punjabis and Indo-Guyanese immigrants.
Little Guyana is centered at Liberty and Lefferts. Officially it may be Ozone Park, but is known to residents as Richmond Hill. It's the center of the Indo-Caribbean and Sikh communities in Queens. Many different types of people live in Richmond Hill, from the well-to-do, to the large Sikh community, to the working-class Indo-Caribbean. In the wealthier sections, large elegant Victorian houses can be found, while in other sections there are rundown houses, "Fedder-style" family homes, and small modest homes.
The greater Richmond Hill area can be reached by taking the J or the Z train to 111 St. in Queens. A rush-hour J train can have commuters into Manhattan in as few as 30 minutes. [1]
While the Indian immigrants get along fairly well with their polyethnic neighbors, Indians from Guyana, South America and the Caribbean are not met with welcoming arms, as the native Indians do not necessarily consider them to be genuine Indians. Because they are not particularly welcomed in the flourishing Indian communities of Flushing and Elmhurst because of that belief, they choose to settle in Richmond Hill of Queens instead.[2] |
