IRISH NEIGHBORHOODS IN NEW YORK CITY
Woodlawn
is a small residential neighborhood in the northern Bronx. With fewer than 8,000 residents, Woodlawn is known for its large Irish American population . Running through the heart of Woodlawn is Katonah Avenue, which is popular for its numerous Irish pubs, Irish bakeries and specialty shops. A Catholic church in Woodlawn serves as a center for Irish culture, offering Irish language classes and assistance for Irish immigrants. | |
Inwood
is known for its park and family appeal, and is an interesting example of Old Immigration and 20th century immigrants. However, it is now mostly populated by Dominican and Puerto Rican immigrants. Although the new immigrant population is very evident, the old Irish influence can still be easily seen in the names of streets, pubs and businesses. | |
Hell's Kitchen
is a very historic area known for its diversity and was a site of old immigrant neighborhoods, including the Irish. Now known as Clinton, it continues to have an elderly Irish community, but has been heavily gentrified and no longer seems to have an Irish concentration of population. | |
Woodhaven
is located in Queens and is a upper middle class area that is an illustration of new immigration and old immigration meeting. Woodhaven is surrounded by areas that are extremely diverse and have a significant South Asian population that greatly influences the neighborhood and leads to Woodhaven itself being a mixture of cultures and people. |
