The Chinese neighborhoods in New York City are just as much self-imposed societies as they are products of the times. As a result of the racism that Chinese immigrants faced in New York City's past, a Chinese enclave developed called Manhattan Chinatown. In time, due to gentrification, increasing rent and living costs, and crowding, the Chinese community spread out into satellite Chinatowns, including areas of Brooklyn and Queens.
