Due to the great difficulty in adjusting to the American Society and the huge diversity that the Chinese American Community contains, historically a large number of oganizations exist in Chinatown at any given time to conform and help a certain group of Chinese immigrants. While some of these organizations, such as the Red Guard Party in the 1970's, focuses on a specific agenda or goal, most Chinese American organizations are formed to serve as a social network and provides services to it's members. The most famous and the oldest of the organizations that still exists is the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. It was established in New York city i 1883 and now contains more than 60 smaller community organizations, all of them striving to provide social services to the Chinese Immigrant population while also fighting prejudices and to achieve true equality among the races.
