There are countless doctors, lawyers, accountants, and other professionals who work in New York City. Moreover, almost 40% of all Indians in the United States have a master’s, doctorate or other professional degree Indian American Centre for Political Awareness. Although these professionals are vital to the South Asian community, the majority chose to work outside of the ethnic economy and ethnic community. For the purposes of this research project, I would like to focus on the South Asian population who chose to stay and work within the ethnic community, specifically Jackson Heights.

Above all, I hope to utilize personal interviews in order to attach personal stories to the overall phenomena. I hope to understand the role these people play within the Jackson Heights South Asian community and why they chose to remain within the community. Additionally, I would like to look at advertisements in local newspapers and contact professional organizations.

After completing my research I would like to be able to answer the following questions: Who chooses to stay in the ethnic community? What kind of educational background do the people have? What services do they provide to the community? Why did they decide to return?
