Bensonhurst

Throughout the years, Bensonhurst has been known as a predominantly Italian neighborhood. Since the 1950s, the Italian influences could easily be seen walking down the streets of 18th Avenue. However, in recent years the neighborhood has taken on a new appearance. New faces from Asia and Eastern Europe have made Bensonhurst their home, gradually diversifying the neighborhood. Today, one can walk down the street and see restaurants, stores, or centers that are of different cultures right next one another. The history of Bensonhurst, much like today, has involved the interaction of many different groups of people. Sometimes peaceful, and at other times explosive, the many different cultures and events have shaped Bensonhurst it into the neighborhood that it is today.
