Horace Silver -Lisette Model

I found the photographs at this exhibit extraordinarily powerful and moving. I really felt connected to the subjects, as if I were looking in on a secretive, hidden aspect of a person’s life. I also was interested in how the art form evolved, from Lisette’s individual portraits to her successors’ use of photography to depict the dynamic city, or lavish galas, or social institutions. One photo by Rosalind Solomon, entitled “Police Museum Tour”, depicted a group of young black teenagers staring in fascination at a rifle display, with a group of white police guards watching the boys intently. The photo had a strong element of irony and unrest. It not only displayed the emotions of the subjects, but also embodied the unjust social and economic institutions of the time. This photo’s purpose was much different from those of Solomon’s predecessors.

Perhaps the picture that moved me the most was Lisette’s “Horace Silver”. The picture is taken at an angle from the floor, facing upwards, illumination three-quarters of the body of a frantic pianist. He is sweating and wildly playing the piano. He is so overcome by his work. His whole body and soul is invested in his art. I was so fascinated by this man’s emotion, I just had to pause and reflect on the piece.
