Next classes – ideas

So nobody has come forward with any ideas for our final two classes. Sad.

To get the ball rolling, here are some things I would like to see or do with you…

For all events, the sooner we decide what to do the better so I can try to get us in for free or reduced rate. We need to make a final decision for our Dec 5 class by this Wednesday (Nov. 28). If you don’t decide something, I will!

    i like:
    # Walking tour of Central Park ($free)
    # An afternoon at the movies – independent film at Film Forum, your choice of The Violin (Mexico, 2006) on December 5, Nanking (USA, 2007) on December 12, or Camp do Thiaroye (Senegal, 1987) on December 12 ($6).
#art-themed scavenger hunt at Baruch (free – leave it to me to arrange or you can come up with something)

  2. Margaret Fu Says:

i want to see the nanking film

  3. syed hassan Says:

can we have like a scavenger hunt all around the city?? Ive made a couple of scavenger hunts myself, so i could help you put it together or something.

but the walking tour of central park and movies sound good too

I think the “Backstage Tour of the Met” would be great; especially because we are seeing an opera this week. This seems like a unique opportunity and I think it would be great to see how some world-renowned productions are put on stage. Another event that I thought would be interesting is watching an Independant Film. At first I thought this wouldnt be too great because there’s no way we can discuss anything during the actual movie and share our impressions but then I think it would be great to watch an independant movie as opposed to the mainstream movies on 42nd in the big theaters. Most people are only used to watching mainstream and hugely advertised movies – I think it would be very interesting to go check out an independant movie since there are lots of differences!

well four responses is better than none! though twenty responses might be better…

sounds like you are liking the movie idea overall

syed, if we did a scavenger hunt, we would need to be able to see & share the results within the class time, which is why I was limiting it to Baruch – but if you had another idea I’d be happy to explore it. it should have an arts-related theme to connect it with the ideas and forms we’ve been exploring this semester. feel free to contact me directly too if you want.

Anyone feeling strongly about one event (backstage at the opera?) might be well-advised to rally others around her cause & drum up support!

  6. Eilene Says:

i like the movies idea and i’ve never been to staten island but i’m not sure if i really wanna go…

isn’t it a little cold to be exploring central park??
the circus also sounds cool but wouldn’t that be outside of the class time??

  7. Eilene Says:

For the scavenger hunt, how about something like the Amazing Race? You can make up clues and we have to run around the city trying to find these pieces and take a picture of it or something like that. It could start in the classroom at 2:30 and we all have to meet back by 4:45-5 to share what we found and how far we got. Well, the idea needs a little fixing up but its a start, any other suggestions?

  8. Daniel Panit Says:

I like it… ya and perhaps we could all chip in a few bucks and the winner gets a cool prize

  9. Daniel Panit Says:

I think it would be more fun to have like Scavenger Hunt in the City… maybe limit it to like a certain radius but…. i still think it would be really cool to have something like the Amazing Race
I dunno seems like a good idea, it just needs some more input to get started

I am in love with the scavenger hunt idea.
There’s been art I’ve seen lately in a series called Art in the Parks (http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/attractions/public_art/pa_temporary_exhibits.html)
which features piece of sculpture blending into the new york city environment. I was thinking of doing this for a review once, but the idea was too big for me – we could use the art that’s in manhattan as the points in the scavenger hunt maybe?

  11. Zoe Sheehan Saldana Says:

Susan, that’s a great idea. It would work really well with our class theme about art being where you find it (if you just open your eyes, ears, and minds!).Eilene, going along with your ideas, I would love it if the results of the scavenger hunt could make their way back to the class and onto the blog in a creative way, too.

Folks, what do you think? Can we get a small committee together to work on this for our Dec 12 class? It sounds like it might take a bit of time to plan well.

  12. annacymerman Says:

    Hey guys
I like the movie idea because well, you can never go wrong with going to the movies =)
Also, the scavenger hunt idea sounds cool.. I’ve never done one of those before- good idea Eilene!

  13. oscarmez Says:

the scavenger hunt idea sounds awesome, especially since its around the city. the movies would be good of either the violin or nanking. the walking tour of central park doesnt sound that bad because it would always be great to learn about new spots or just start wrestling in the grass.

  14. Daniel Panit Says:

hmm a committee would seem like a good idea… but the people in the committee would have nothing to do
what we all give in places to go to and take pictures…maybe each of us try and make our own riddle for the place
then we get the list at class and we go off and meet back up at 5

  15. Daniel Panit Says:

    basically something like…
Gogh here to see the stars at night
meaning you would to MoMa and take a pic w/ Van Gogh’s Starry Night

  16. syed hassan Says:

Yea Dan leave the clues to me, I’d like to know my constraining radius, so that I can survey out the area and see what my clues would be relating to. How abt a svavenger hunt around Central Park, i know they have lots of things that i could use for clues. So thats my share for the committee

  17. bonnylin Says:

wow the scavenger hunt idea is really coming along- sounds cool
i also like the central park idea though it may be chilly but we can play before/after! xD

  18. siwenliao Says:

ya I agree with the ppl who wanna do the scavenger hunt. It seems such a cool idea, and we should definitely restraint to Manhattan, central park or something of that kind. Hopefully, it won’t be cold on whichever day we do. lol, I haven’t done a scavenger hunt myself.

  19. susan Says:

I’m not so sure on doing art pieces in museums, one because you have to go through admissions, two because I’m don’t think they’d appreciate a bunch of crazed teenagers running through their halls for one piece of art and three because new musuems are just generally hard to navigate~ Is there another thing we can look for?

lol dan – that’s witty XD

    http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/attractions/public_art/pa_temporary_exhibits.html
check it out guys~ if we can choose pieces near baruch in a certain radius – those could be our points on the scavenger hunt :D ?

  20. Zoe Sheehan Saldana Says:

OK how about this for the scavenger hunt on Dec 12.

As Susan suggests the clues have to be in the parks. They could be the temporary exhibits or the permanent monuments or could be other things you find in the parks.

Each person (or team of 2?) gets a different specific clue and has to go find it. To complicate matters, while on your search for the specific clue you also have to come up with some more abstract clues. These abstract clues have to relate to the arts – how about we come up with a list of different words that complete the sentence, “Art is _________” . And you could find these clues wherever you are, if you look hard enough.

The locations have to be in Manhattan, below 63 St. That way you are never too far from Baruch but you have a lot of territory available.

You have to take a photograph that shows your clues – it could be taken in a creative way – we will collect the photos/clues and then turn them into a slide show or a movie upon return to the classroom by 4:45pm. You would need your cameras and your cables and cords to get the photos from your cameras & into the computer.

We can do this on Dec. 12, as our last class meeting before the final. You have a blurb due Dec 12 also.

Now as for Dec 5 it sound like if we are between a walking tour of Central Park and “The Violin” at Film Forum. I’m game for either.

It’s hard to go wrong with movies and this movie looks like a good one – it’s about music and politics, and is shot in stunning black and white, independently made, won a lot of prizes. It would start at 3pm and is about 100 minutes long.

Central Park is an amazing work of art too (did you know it’s all made intentionally? there is nothing ‘natural’ about it) and there is a lot to see and do even in just a small area. If we met at Central Park we could walk for an hour or an hour and a half then return to the classroom for some talk which might be good too since we haven’t been able to talk much lately.

What do you prefer for Dec 5? Don’t forget you have a podcast review due then too.

Well that’s a lot to ponder but then again you are honors students so I think you’re up to the challenge!
