Nymph Drying her Hair- Louis-Claude Vassé
The stance of this European piece reminded me very much of myself. Louis-Claude Vassé’s piece which is entitled, “Nymph Drying her Hair,” is a French piece that depicts a female wringing the water out of her hair. I often find myself in this stance after I get out of the shower, pool, or beach. What I found very interesting about this piece is that a male sculptor created it. It is amusing that he is familiar with the stance of females drying their hair and that he has observed enough females drying their hair that he is able to get every detail correct. The intricacy of the fountain’s base is also something to note. There is a skillfully decorated water basin which she is leaning on. In addition, it seems that the base is made up of a sea shell with two snakes coming from both ends. The female is not afraid, however. She stands calmly drying her hair in the nude. I don’t think I would be able to remain that calm if two serpents were coming towards me while I was drying my hair.
