In this course I guided students through the creation of the final project below, which I and our team conceived and developed in conjunction with the aim of the course (which was, in sum, a sociological study into the various ways Staten Island is demographically misrepresented in studies of New York). Of particular importance here is the structure of the project, with students working in small groups to create their own sites, but also taking part in collective decisions about overall style and elements: the result was a high-level of buy-in, and meeting many of the project’s learning objectives. These included: competency creating and customizing a site, competency with tools such as google maps and techniques such as image mapping, an understanding of the field of sociology, and more traditional research and writing competencies.
