The world is full of things the eye doesn't see. The camera can see more and often ten times better. - Andreas Feininger

This photograph illustrates the wonder the city holds within a single moment. Feininger captures a dynamic black and white picture of a train track above Bowery street. The juxtaposition of the shadows and the sunlight below the railroad tracks creates an interesting composition that shows that one instant can contain beauty and tranquility. This photo depicts a moment that so many tend to overlook. The camera, however, captures it fully and highlights the peace within a chaotic scene. The contrast between black and white is simultaneously chaotic, due to the repetitive pattern, and peaceful, as the two colors lessen the disorder within the photo. The contrast created within Feininger’s piece reflects the nature of New York in which there is constant commotion amidst a fixed environment composed of infrastructure and architecture. This composition emphasizes an important aspect of living in New York City, that I’ve begun to learn in my short experience as a New Yorker – taking a moment to pause within the commotion reveals the wonder the city holds and the peace it can create, despite the constant movement and chaos that occurs within.
