Every year Macaulay Honors College students in Seminar 1: The Arts in New York City take photographs for a cross-campus exhibit. All students must take photographs on Tuesday, October 11 (at any time during that 24-hour period).  We’re not interested in tourist shots, but your own view–the picture that shows where you are and what it means to be in that place on this particular day.

The exhibit consists of two parts:

  • First, you will upload your pictures to our online Gallery.
  • Second, we will print your pictures for inclusion in a display curated by a group of classmates and a professional artist and curator.

Here is the information for the event:

  • Take photos on October 11, 2016. (Note that you can take a photo at anytime during the 24-hour period.  If religious or other obligations prevent you from using a camera after sundown on October 11, it’s fine to shoot your photo before sunset–anytime after 12:01 AM and before 11:59 PM will work).
  • You don’t need any kind of expensive or sophisticated camera.  Any digital camera will work.  Cellphone cameras are just fine.  What matters is the eye of the photographer, not the technical tool.
  • Each student will choose only one photo and upload it to the online gallery. Your Seminar instructor may want to work with you and your classmates to choose your best photo.  Or you may choose your own.  Either way, please upload your photo before October 28th.
  • The physical exhibit will take place at the STEAM Festival at Macaulay Honors College, on December 3 and 4, 2016.  All photos uploaded to the gallery will be included in the physical exhibit, and families and guests will be welcome.
  • If you’re interested in being one of the student curators for that exhibit, please contact Dean Ugoretz (joseph.ugoretz@mhc.cuny.edu)

Here are instructions for uploading your photograph (NOTE: PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO THE LAST STEP OF TITLING AND WRITING A DESCRIPTION OF YOUR PHOTO!):

    1. Go to http://macaulay.cuny.edu/gallery/Snapshot-NYC-2016
    2. Click on the “Register” link at the top right.
    3. Create a username, and enter your full name (use your real full name because it will appear with your photo) and your email address.  The URL field is optional so you can just leave it blank. (Note that you will need to enter the CAPTCHA phrase as well.)
    4. Click “Register” and you will immediately be asked to change your password. Please take note of your temporary password in case of error. (See Fig. 1, below)
    5. Note: You will receive an email at the address you used to register, but it’s just a reminder and a welcome.
    6. After you are logged in, you will be in the Snapshot 2016 gallery (please verify that you are, as you want to post your photo to this particular gallery).
    7. Add your photo by selecting “Add > Add Photos” along the top menu bar (see Fig. 2).
    8. Click the link in the popup window that says “Select Photos (134M max per file)…” and browse to the photo on your computer you wish to upload. Wait until it tells you that the upload is completed.
    9. You are not done yet! You must now give the photo a proper Title and Description!  Find your photo in the gallery and mouse over it.  You will see a setting for “Options” (see Fig. 3) – select “Options > Edit this photo” (See Fig. 4) – and provide a Title and Description.
    10. If you have any problems or questions, send an email to pamelaburger@gmail.com .
