Crime in Chinatown

Some of these laborers work in sweatshops that produce these goods that are then sold around Chinatown. These goods can be anything from watches to handbags. Since they resemble designer products but are made for a small fraction of the cost they are sold at large profit margins, sometimes to consumers who are aware that these goods may be illegal. Recently the police have begun cracking down on the sale of these counterfeit goods. In February 2008, the police raided a series of stores and confiscated fake merchandise worth over $1 million. The stores were closed until the property owners finished paying fines to the city. (Chan, 2008)
