“What If We Built Our Public Spaces through Placemaking?” Project for Public Spaces. N.p., n.d. Web. 11 Sept. 2014.
The Project for Public Spaces (PPS) website centers around the idea of “Placemaking.” Placemaking is a movement that aims to make public spaces the heart of the community in cities, thus strengthening the connection people have with the places they share. It is, in part, an effort to create better urban designs as well as facilitating all the various connections and uses people have with the space, including economic, social, cultural, and ecological. The movement listens to what the community desires and needs and takes action based on them. PPS is a nonprofit organization that aims to build strong communities by way of creating and sustaining public spaces.
This website serves as a great resource for looking into various projects that are being developed around the world in terms of tying communities to public spaces. Additionally, there are references to further texts on this topic. The websites also provides lists of the organization’s ideas of successful public spaces and the different kinds. The information is broad enough to give me ideas to build on yet specific enough to direct me to finding appropriate research.
