December 12 – Final Class!

Dear Art Explorer,

We are winding down towards the end of the semester with our last class on December 12th.  Your first semester as freshman at Macaulay Honors College has been quite an amazing start beginning with RoseAnne Spradlin to Hurricane Sandy to “dormitoryless” and back! All of you have gone through these upheavals with grace.

Your last blog will be on the opera of course (please see Next Week’s Assignment) and on December 12 you will present your Final Project Presentation.

I’m looking forward to your performances.  It has been my deepest pleasure to share this journey with you.

warmly,   Donna Uchizono

December 5 – Backstage at the Met!

Alexandra was able to get a “meet and greet” backstage at the Met for December 5th’s performance!  Exciting News.  In the “green room” no less.  She assumes it will be after the performance but we will keep you posted.

The suggestion is to meet at the water fountain in front of the Met at 7:15.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Warmly,

Donna

November 28 – Roosevelt House

Dear Art Explorers,

It is Mozart week.  We will meet at the Roosevelt House and are lucky to have guest lecturer Alexander Cohn visit our seminar to talk about Mozart’s Don Giovanni.  You must come to class prepared for her lecturer which includes having read  Don Giovanni  libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte,  viewing the videos listed under the assignments tab, prepared answers to the questions provided by Ms. Cohn and on your own become familiar with the music of Don Giovanni.

Please look at Next Week’s Assignments Tab.

“The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.”

― Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Instructions for creating your SmartHistory-Style video

Step one:
I create the ePortfolio page where my photo will be. I enter a title, I categorize as “SmartHistory-style Photos,” and I insert a good version of the photo into my post.

I go to Upload/Insert above the post rectangle, and I find the photograph that I want to talk about. I insert the photo into the post. And I save.

Step two:
When I have the time, I meet with my partner, and begin my SmartHistory Recording.  One one computer, you will have the photo you will analyze while you talk. You can use these instructions on the second computer. On a second computer, you will:

>open Garageband
>New Project
>Podcast
Click one of the recordings (Male voice or Female voice) and begin recording.
**Test the recording to make sure all is working fine.
Proceed with analyzing the photograph.

See this Apple tutorial for more help.

Step three:
Edit your recording down to three minutes max. (it can be between 2 and 3 minutes). Do this in Garageband by clicking Edit >Split and then >Split again and delete the chunk in the middle.

Step four:
Export your recording from Garageband. When your editing is complete, in Garageband, go to Share > Export Song to iTunes

Step five:
Insert the recording into the post. Here is how.
1) Go to the post that you began with your photograph on it, and click the little “Edit” button.
2) Go to Upload/Insert and find your recording in the finder. Clik, and let it upload (May take awhile.)
3) As with the mp4 videos, DO NOT INSERT INTO POST.  Instead copy (Command+C) the URL location of the podcast.
4) Scroll down, well below the window, and you will see podPress settings.
5) Clik Add Media File Button and paste your link into the Location. Type a title, and press auto detect for File Size and Included in.

If you are more visual and would like to see this done, check my friend Jenny’s screencast. (She’s an ITF at Brooklyn College).

PUBLISH! You’re all done. You should see your recording as a little play button arrow, as in this example.

PINA! DVD not available at Netflix. (They are still waiting for their shipment too.)

Hello ARt Explorers,

I talked with Netflix and they too are waiting for their shipment of the DVD PINA!

We will be attending Pina Bausch on October 19 and immediately following, you will be required to see choreographer Jerome Bel’s “The Show Must Go On” at MOMA (You choose between October 20 (Saturday) at 1 or 3 or October 21 (Sunday) at 1.

Jérôme Bel (French, b.1964) is a central figure in a group of contemporary European choreographers who have questioned the fundamental parameters of their own practice—and the practice of choreography in general. As a result, they have produced highly conceptual and critical works that expand the boundaries of what dance can be. At MoMA, Bel stages The Show Must Go On (2001), which, in many respects, serves as a response to Judson Dance Theatre and Steve Paxton, whose work is shown in the same week. (notes from MOMA)

While we are waiting for the PINA! dvd (from either Macaulay or Netflix), you will view Youtube segments of Jerome Bel’s piece that was commissioned by the Paris Opera Ballet. Normally a choreographer creates a dance for the company which they perform. Since this is the Paris Opera Ballet, the audiences expect to see a ballet, even though some of the ballets are modern ballets (such as the Hong Kong Ballet we saw for Fall for dance). But in the “Jerome Bel” style, this choreographer again challenged the parameters of dance. While watching the piece “Veronique Doisneau”, keep in mind that this was seen by a ballet audience that has certain expectations of what dance is. Since it was a ballet audience they are also quite very familiar with the classics, such as Swan Lake, Giselle, etc. Before viewing “Veronique Doisneau”, you will start with a clip of the Pas de Deux from Swan Lake danced by the students of the Canada’s National Ballet School. This clip is a student showcase, thus the dance technical aspects are not the most professional but this was the best clip for Jerome Bel’s piece for those who are not familiar with Swan Lake.
