9/8 Assignment

^ This is Hassam’s painting of the Washington Arch in Washington square park in 1890.

^ This is a modern picture I took of the Washington Arch. I realized after I took several pictures of the arch that this one included a woman’s red stroller which resembles the red wheel the man old man is in front of in the original one. I captured the buildings in the background of the image, similar to the ones captured in Hassam’s painting. Although there are no longer trees lined up in front of the arch there are some along the side. There wasn’t a fountain in the painting and so I made it the corner of the image the way the little patch of green is in the painting. I believe the distance from my camera to the arch is the same one captured in the painting. In my picture I tried to cut the angle, or image at the top of the arch the way Hassam did. Although in the painting it seems to be winter it was still sun outside, and so I caught the brightness of the day in my picture. The vanishing point in both images are in the center of the arch. My angle may be more of an upward angle, and more to the left but I think it captures a very similar essence of the painting which is why I chose it. I found many similarities between both images and so I believe this represents a modern capture of the painting.

The Arch in Hassam painting has a frontal view. It’s top is parallel to the ground, your photograph shows one of the corners. We will discuss in class how visual geometry is manifested in reality. Good work.
