9/8 Assignment

For this assignment, I chose Childe Hassam’s 1890 painting, Washington Arch, Spring. The photo and the painting almost match up due to several factors. Both the photo and painting are at ground level and they both seem to be at an equal distance apart between the painter/photographer and the arch. In both, the arch’s right leg appears to be a vanishing point. The differences in both are attributed to time, season, slight camera tilt, and the differences in the park due to a 120 year difference between painting and photo. The time of day in the painting could have been any daylight hour during the spring season, while the photo was taken in a summer afternoon. The camera does not perfectly capture the position of the arch as it appears in the painting. The park in which the arch resides no longer has trees placed on neither the front nor the back of the arch and there is no grassy areas off to sides which are seen in the painting.

Very nice Post, you even got the time of day right, from the shadow lines on the ground in the photograph.
