For my post, I chose to photograph the Washington Arch in Washington Square Park with Nick Burney. Obviously, the photograph was taken at a different angle than Hassam’s painting. Hassam’s painting was made from a perspective much closer to the structure, as can be seen from the relative size difference. Other differences include the presence and positioning of the trees. If you look at Hassam’s painting, you will notice that there is a greater number of trees in the immediate proximity of the arch. In my photograph, only one such tree nearby the arch can be viewed. Additionally, the large building present in my picture is not visible in Hassam’s painting, suggesting that it was built sometime after he made it. I regret not taking more pictures from various angles, that would have made the comparison much more in depth and shed some light on the changes in Washington Square Park over time.
