Artist or not?

Dictionary.com says that an artist is “a person who displays in his work qualities…such as sensibility and imagination.” While I agree that an artist is one who imagines and creates, not all of whom we call “artists” today actually adhere to this definition. Take, for instance, music “artists”. Today, anyone who has put out anything from a single hit to multiple albums is considered an artist. However, many of today’s young pop singers like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez don’t compose their own music or write their own lyrics. Some don’t even know how to sing, and rely on modern technologies like the famed auto-tune to sound good. Can these people really be called artists? What they are actually doing is showcasing the real artists’ work, only adding aesthetic appeal to a composition. No creativity or thought goes into what these people do, as they are directed by music video crews, corrected by record producers, and given lyrics and music by songwriters. Thus, while the original definition of an artist is still maintained in the 21st century, standards have been lowered for whom we may consider an artist. While composers and creators of paintings, drawings, music, and sculptures are the principle artists, those that interpret their work may also be called artists nowadays.

Very nice point. Maybe we should consider these singers artisans? The Pop Art movement took art back to the people, saying that we can all do it. Quality was no longer of importance, nor was creativity. As you have stated, we now have a large industry built around the idea of interpretation. So who is the artist?

  2. At least in the music industry, I wouldn’t consider the executor of a piece an artist unless he or she has actually written and/or composed the piece. That’s not to say that he or she isn’t talented if he or she didn’t participate in the composition of the piece, not everyone can sing or play an instrument. Nevertheless, art involves creativity and innovation, which is generally lacked among those that only sing or only play an instrument. Musicians may bring a piece to life, but the piece wouldn’t even exist without the true artist that composed it.
