10/13 Assignment

Rotating images

Daniel P. and I were given a short write-up about a method of rotating an image to reveal another image. I believe what this technique tries to achieve is to figure out how the mind understands the correct order of the surroundings and how it relies on familiar markers to make sense of an otherwise topsy-turvy image. To quote from the text: “So to help the mind realize what it is doing, why not try turning the world inside out, back to front, or possibly upside down?” We automatically try to figure the world out in logical ways so that we can have a sense of order or understanding of it. This technique, then, gives our over-analytical brains a little jolt to make everything fresh again and to gain a new understanding that there are many different planes of “logical” that exists in the world, and that we can look at things from different perspectives.

This is a famous one by M.C. Escher. You can view this image many different ways by tilting your head.

This is one of the examples from our handout:Gustave Verbeck, 1904

Another cool one is found in this link by the artist Guiseppe Arcimboldo.
