Science versus Art

The sciences offer people concrete explanations of the “structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observations and experiments” (American Heritage). We tend to choose the sciences over the arts for that very reason. Science is able to prove things through experiments and observations. Biology is able to explain the functions of living things through observations of cells and organisms. Chemistry is able to provide explanations about the chemical make up of the world. Physics explains the mechanical aspect. Art doesn’t offer these concrete explanations. It is more open to people’s interpretations and emotions.

We are often raised to think scientifically and I think that is probably also why people choose the sciences to replicate our understanding of the world. Science has rules about life that have been proven through numerous experiments. Art doesn’t offer those set-in-stone rules about the existence of people and different organisms. We have gotten accustomed to thinking scientifically about the world around us.

Art and science are very different. Science involves more left-brained thinking as opposed to Art, which involves more right-brained thinking. Science involves more rational thoughts, which are characteristic of the left hemisphere style. Art is more intuitive, which is related to the right hemisphere style. Through the sciences, people are able to dedicate numbers and statistics to the understanding of the world. An artist understanding of the world involves finding patterns and more open-ended questions and answers. It is up to each individual to decide which field explains the world around him or her more accurately.
