Communicating Through Dance

Compared to spoken languages such as English or Spanish, dance really can’t be considered a language. But I think of language as a way to express oneself or tell a story, therefore, making dance a language.  Dancers are able to tell stories through their movements. Like sign language, they are able to communicate their thoughts through the dance. When they are trying to express sorrow, their steps become less grandiose and subtler. Anger can be expressed through loud stomping and more aggravated movements. Dance is similar to body language, in that a lot can be understood from the movements of the dancer.

Before verbal communication, people used dance as a way to worship to or communicate with their gods. The rain dance was their way of asking for rain. Many cultures used dance in mating rituals and other spiritual events. Other cultures used dance to tell stories about their hunting experiences. All these various thoughts were expressed through simple dance steps.

It is true that there is no way to make sentences or express certain words through dance. There is however, a way to express overall thoughts in regards to emotions.
