Hello, my name is Joenard Camarista and I am a biomedical engineering student at The City College of New York.
I spent the summer of 2012 repairing donated medical equipment in Nicaragua. |
– which makes them more dangerous than helpful
– because hospital staff don’t know how to operate them because the manuals are not translated to their language
– because spare replacement parts aren’t available locally so they just wear away
Ultimately, these machines are in service for a very brief period (if at all) before ending up rotting away in a landfill or, equally worse, in a storage house, wasting money the hospital can be using for delivering better care. This is a backwards cycle that I want to start remedying through this project.
The Duke-EWH Summer Institute is a two-month placement (May 29th to July 29th) in a developing country hospital offered by Engineering World Health and Duke University, which consists of repairing desperately needed equipment as well as training the doctors and the nurses in the use of this equipment.
Since its inception in 2004, hundreds of students in EWH summer programs have worked on thousands of pieces of equipment, placing nearly 70% of that equipment back into service.
Over 500 pieces of medical equipment were placed back into service in 2010 alone. That represents nearly $1,086,000 worth of equipment, enabling diagnostic and treatment procedures that will benefit thousands of patients of all ages.
