Two articles for next week have been posted on Art/Science collaborations. You
can begin readings these two articles with the following questions in mind (you
can use these to respond to the readings for next week):
1)      What are some commonalities between science and art?
2)      What are your connections to art and how might this also connect you with
science?

We will not meet as a class on Monday, October 21st (I will be away at a
conference).  For Monday you will work in groups of 2-3 to integrate the
readings on place-based education, art/science and the prior readings from the
text and address the following:
1)      What are some principles of place-based learning that you identify across the
text? How is place-based education also informal science learning?
2)      How can science and art be integrated in place-based education in meaningful
ways (that are also true to the processes that guide scientific and artistic
inquiry)?
3)      What are some suggestions for art/science collaborative projects for
Brooklyn/Barbuda?
4)      How can we connect the youth in Brooklyn and Barbuda through art/science
collaborations?

On Wednesday October 23rd when we meet again, each pair, triad will 1) share out
their suggestions with the class—discussing their suggestions and connections
to the readings and 2) submit a 1-2 pager via email to me with the answers to
the above questions, referencing the readings.

For the week of October 28th we will continue our discussions on place-based
education with a leaning towards culturally relevant science, indigenous
knowledge and traditional ecological knowledge.  A monograph based on work done
by Macaulay Honors students in the National Park during the summer 2010 is
posted, I will assign specific chapters to read but you could begin browsing the
table of contents.

On Monday, October 28th each Group Project group will give an update of where
you are with your project. Remember to start your group project blogs this week!

Here is an event that promises to be interesting!

Here is a nice opportunity to see Science and Technology in the City in action, especially for those who are into being creative and inventive. It is the Maker Faire, which is the showcase of the Maker/DIY movement, which is becoming a common way that people engage in science and technology endeavors outside of school. We will discuss this in class later in the semester. Below are two ways of participating: one link is if you want to be an attendee and the other is if you have time and want to volunteer.

This is an option for observing and visiting science place and spaces (it is in conjunction with the New York Hall of Science). If you decide to go, you could include it in your informal science site visits blog. If you want to purchase tickets, let me know and I will see if they could be purchased through Macaulay. I make no promises, but will try.

Next week (9/16 and 9/18) we will read and discuss “Surrounded by Science”
chapter 2 and pages 13-17.  You will do a reading reflection post (250 words)
about the reading.

For the following week (9/23 and 9/25) we will read the articles and pages
relevant to the Citizen Science discussion.
