Project Update 2

The weather is definitely getting colder, but in a beautiful Fall way. There are clear skies and the leaves are finally changing colors! People are slowly wearing hats and gloves, and temperatures have dipped into the high 30s.

I think our first trip will be to Belvedere Castle, and to figure out why that is the spot that is chosen to take temperature for Manhattan. It has been taking meteorological measurements since 1919, which is fascinating. Almost 100 years!

Project Update 1

This past week I’ve been walking around and noticing the changes of weather as we progress into fall. The weather has been cooler, with slight wind and clear skies. An interesting observation of mine has been that you can’t just look at the overall temperature for the day. You need to look at an hour-by-hour weather report. I leave my house very early in the morning and it is very cold. By midday, I am regretting the sweater and warm clothing that I chose in the morning. I am usually out late, and by nighttime, I wish I would’ve put on boots. Practically, I have been taking pictures and been checking out the website that we will be posting our observations on.

In regards to my job as communicator, I’ve been researching the modes of transportation to the two places we would like to visit, Belvedere Castle and Laguardia Airport. The next step is to figure out a date that works for the members of the group.

Week 3

This week had relatively cold weather. Cold sunny says with temperatures in the mid50’s. The weekend was met with some rainy weather, though it cleaned up late Saturday and temperatures rose to the mid60’s over the weekend.

I found an article online that discusses the effect of the weather on airplane departures.  Hopefully, this article will prove to be extremely helpful in writing our paper.

Week 3

This week was pretty gloomy and with only small rays of sun passing through the clouds. The days were windy and chilly and its starting to get darker earlier. This is expected as the seasons change and daylight savings approaches. The leaves have changed color around Brooklyn and you can no longer walk around without at least a sweater. However, this thursday it was unusually warm. This could possibly be because it was cloudy and the clouds trapped the heat close to the ground instead of letting it rise. Thursday night we experienced a little drizzle and followed by morning showers on Friday.

Week 2

This week has had some very interesting weather changes. Sunday still had some breezy and sunny weather. Monday also maintained that comfortable yet slightly chilly temperatures. Tuesday was a confusing day as far as the weather wen. The temperature was high 40’s to low 50’s. For the first few hours, it was cloudy. Then it got really warm and sunny. Then, just an hour or so later, it was cloudy again and began to drizzle. This back and forth went on for the remainder of the day. Wednesday through the weekend was met with typical fall weather- breezy cool days, with relatively sunny skies, and evening temperatures dropping to the low 40’s (and even high 30’s). It seems that a month late into the Fall season, Fall has finally arrived.

I think that at this point, I need to discuss with my group members what are exact take on weather in NY we wish to take. In this manner, I can then begin to look for some journal articles that may help us in our research, in an effort to organize all our data and information into a coherent piece.

Week 2 Update

I began posting onto the Almanac this week. The website is really interesting and also sends notifcations to others in the area, regarding your post and also about similar posts. This way we are able to see what other people are also saying about the change in weather and the weather patterns that they observe in their own neighborhood.

Regarding the weather, one major change that is extremely noticeable is the sudden drop in temperature. The air is much more crisp and the there is a cold breeze that reminds us that autumn has finally arrived. For many days it was warm and the weather was very unusual and unlikely for fall weather. But this week, the change in the colors of the leaves and the chapped lips, reminds us that it is now autumn and as we approach the end of October winter is very close-by. Furthermore, this weather change was very drastic and very unpredictable. Usually once October arrives the temperatures are in the high 40s to low 50s for most of the month. However, we have been experiencing really warm weather, very similar to that of spring, in New York City and Brooklyn, which is very unusual for this time of year. For this reason, this week of October came as shock as we were not prepared for the cold weather and sudden drop in temperature.

In addition, the days are much shorter and the nights are also very chilly as well. Sunset is as early as 6 nowadays, also expected as a result of the rotation of the earth around the sun. I think that the weather will remain like this for most of November and we can expect a very cold winter.

Project Update #2

This week I began posting on the website, thealmanac.org. Each of us are posting once a week. However, we can post more than once a week on the website. These were my posts for this week:

October 23, 2013

Fall is definitely in the air. The days and nights have gotten chillier. The sun seems to appear and disappear. First, I walk outside, seeing the sun and feeling that the temperature will be moderate, and then I walk out again and find that I’m not dressed properly for this cool fall weather!

October 25, 2013

The air is so cold in Brooklyn today! The sun is out, shining, yet the fall chill has settled in.

Aside from this, I have been emailing my group members every week to make sure that they remember to take pictures, to post on the website, thealmanac.org and to also remember to blog on this eportfolio page.  We are still in the works with trying to get our trips to places sorted out and will hopefully be visiting places soon. We have created a website for our group, but it is still underway and in the process of being used regularly. I have posted once and plan on posting again soon. I have asked the other group members for their input for what we should put on it as well. I will begin to start researching for our group paper and also will start to think about how to make our digital deliverable. I will also continue to observe the weather and will continue to blog about it.

Week 1

This week was a test trial week for our experiment. We had planned on working with Meteon Network in which we would collect daily weather and input it into a global database that would map the world’s weather. However, Sherilyne as well as I had trouble registering with the site and therefore abandoned this citizen science project for a new one. We are now doing the citizen science project iSeeChange: The Almanac. This citizen science project is very similar to the original idea, in that it hopes to map out weather patterns, however with a focus in America. iSeeChange hopes to discover how extreme weather patterns have affects Americans. This projects is very relevant with the odd October weather we are having, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s in mid October. This is very unusual for this season as temperatures usually range in the 50s by now.

Despite the change in citizen science project, we still plan on taking daily pictures of the weather and posting them to a website. Furthermore, we hope to plan a trip to the airport and Central Park’s Balvedere Castle in order to learn more about the weather of New York City and how it is measured and predicted. As suggested by classmates we hope to speak to a radio station as well as Professor Boger regarding weather patterns and the changes that we have seen throughout the years. With the new citizen science project we hope to learn more about how weather has been changing not only in New York City but nationwide and see patterns throughout the nation.

Observation #1

Here is my first observation reported on SciStarter’s iSeeChange Almanac. Today’s weather is very typical of Fall: clear sunny skies, breezy weather, and temperature of mid 60’s. This is a bit warmer than usual Fall, which is in mid to high 50’s. However, the overall weather is Fall-like and not as summery as we’ve seen over this past week (sunny skies, slight to no breeze, temperature in mid 70’s).

As far as my specific role as data organizer, not much has been needed just yet, as we are just beginning to each collect our daily/weekly observations and data.
