A Different Kind of Mural : South Jamaica

Walking through the streets of South Jamaica, you do not expect to find great artwork. However, every now and again, you will find some amazing street art that showcases the culture and talent of South Jamaica. One such creation can be found at 169-18 104th Avenue.

Even though this mural is quite large and easy to spot, it has been around for a few years now and hasn’t changed much since the first time I saw it. The fact that it has lasted for a few years points to either the artists’ intention of making it long-lasting or neglect on the part of sanitation workers; perhaps it’s a combination of both. Although the artists labeled the mural with their names, the names written are most likely aliases, leaving the artists anonymous.

I love this piece of art simply because of its contrast against the surrounding area. Compared to the dreary and downright depressing graffiti throughout the area, this mural conveys optimism and fun to whoever sees it. South Jamaica can be a very rough neighborhood at times and it is refreshing to know that even in a tough neighborhood, creativity and talent can flourish. The artists capture the culture and sentiments of many young people living in South Jamaica. Music appears to be an integral part of this picture and it is no surprise that music is a very important part of the culture in Jamaica. As I grew up, there were many street fairs and events that encouraged youth participation in music. There were always singing contests, rap contests, and even instrumental competitions. Music brought the community together like nothing else could and it provided a way for young men and women to stay out of trouble while building up their creativity.

The light nature of this mural compared to some of the dark graffiti in the surrounding area makes this mural inspirational. It dares to be different and it has been in existence for several years. No one has tried to damage it or destroy it and that serves as an inspiration for children living in the area today. It proves that you can be different and that a life outside of the rough neighborhoods of is possible.
