New York City is one of the most popular cities in the world, having some of the most expensive housing in the state as well as housing millions of people. Living in such an industrious and lively city has made me question many of its interesting facets it holds, and has especially made me wonder about the different types of housing and how housing this system can move people into their New York City homes.

According to Peter Salins, New York City’s housing conditions are inferior to those of the most other American cities, and are destined to get worse in the decades ahead. The reason for this is due to the fact that there aren’t enough homes or apartments being build to reasonably house and accommodate to the needs of new families and offset the deterioration of existing housing units. This particularly shocked me because I had no idea that we, as a city, were in such housing turmoil. Before reading this piece, I thought that many apartments were being built each and every day, However, after looking at the chart of housing construction rates, New York City had relatively low rates compared to other big cities like Dallas, Los Angeles, Houston, and San Francisco. I find Salin’s points on how to revive the market very reasonable. Such suggestions include the need to deregulate all rents and end property tax discrimination. These points help to enable “fair play” within the housing market and allow for there to be less of a social gap within the New York housing system. This would, thereby, help fix the ongoing problem that is present in the housing market.
