The article’s tagline practically screams (although the font is actually italic!) that there are more homeless in New York than there have been in decades. It seems to me that this point is obvious. Even though I have not lived and observed the streets of New York for all that long (considering my age and the fact that I don’t actually live in New York City) it’s abundantly clear to me that there are way too many homeless people on the streets every night. Personally, nearly every night when I’m rushing through the subway system or walking to Port Authority there are always helpless people on the streets. I’ve noticed that some are still begging strangers for some food or money or really anything, whereas others are resigned and bundled up and bedded down for the night. I’ve even started to recognize many of the “regulars” who hang around Times Square and the halls of Port Authority Bus Terminal. It never seems like there is a solution.

The information in the article did corroborate what my dad has often told me – if he sees a woman on the street with children he will call the authorities. It makes sense that the kids don’t want to end up in foster care and would much rather stay together as a family even if they aren’t in a stable home environment. Maybe that’s why I so rarely see children on the street, and until reading the article I didn’t realize just how shocking the numbers are: 1 in 100 children in New York City don’t have a home.
