I was walking in the Union Square train station, when I came across a whole line of these ads. Poland Springs is actually celebrating their supremacy as the number one beverage…in a city with some of the best tap water in the country. Come one New Yorkers, get those reusable water bottles and stop supporting this smug corporation.

This advertisement is such a shame to see when any New Yorker is well aware of the plastic and garbage situation on New York’s beaches. Any New Yorker knows that this city’s beaches are disgusting due to the large amount of trash that we produce. Much of this trash, as we have learned in class, is plastic. It’s a shame that many people are too lazy to go out and buy a reusable water bottle. However, another reason I have heard people say for not getting a reusable water bottle is because they think that tap water, even water filtered by a Brita, tastes different from the water that comes from a company like Poland Springs. This view is completely ludicrous and might be a product of habit or the scorn that some people have for tap water. This scorn might come from associating tap water with dirty water fountains in public places.

Thanks for sharing this Julia. We didn’t discuss the water quality issue so much this semester, but it’s kind of crazy to think that we’re willing to pay $1.00 for 500 ml of water in a plastic bottle when we can get the same stuff for less than a penny from a faucet. Also, care to guess how much water it takes to make the plastic bottle that will hold 500 ml of water?
