Museum of the City of New York

An early piece shown on our tour of the Meseum of the City of New York’s “AIDS at Home” exhibition was one that caught my eye; pictured is a painting by Hugh Steers that depicts the lifestyle of a man with AIDS, for whom someone is caring. I was intrigued by the fact that the man in the bathtub is hiding behind the shower curtain, as if he is hiding himself from the world’s judgements of him for having AIDS. This moved me because other’s perceptions of us have really begun to play a huge role in how we live our lives – even at home in solitude. It’s absolutely saddening that something that one cannot control can become the source of public humiliation, and this is something I hope our society will work on improving.
