RE: The Band’s Visit

The musical, The Band’s Visit is about an Egyptian police band’s stay in an Israeli town.  The band was supposed to go to a cultural center, but because of a mistake in pronunciation, the band arrives in a small Israeli town.  There, the band members interact with the locals.  The band members become friends with the locals.  The band members learn the locals’ backstories, their deeply held emotions, their greatest dreams, and their worst fears.  A romance appears to blossom between the conductor and the cafe worker Dina.  Eventually, the band arrives at the cultural center.

Upon closer examination, The Band’s Visit is about a group of strangers in a strange land.  The Arabic speaking band members are faced with a language barrier, as the locals speak Hebrew.  Both the locals ad the band members had to speak in English to communicate.  They struggle, but find common ground in little odds and ends such as American culture and media.  The musical is interesting from a political standpoint, as it avoids political issues concerning Egypt, the Middle East, and Israel.  In not discussing divisive political conflicts, the show is appealing to everyone.
