Madama Butterfly

Madame Butterfly was an interesting experience. The cast was made up  of the most talented performers I had ever encountered. The set was beautiful and often left me awe-struck. The vocals gave me goosebumps. The costumes were so elaborate and colorful. The orchestra sounded incredible. And the puppet was a little terrifying.

The story did, however, leave me asking a lot of questions and not ecstatic about that ending. The basic plot, is that a grown man takes advantage of and marries a young girl barely fifteen. He then abandons her to raise their son all alone, leaving her slightly brainwashed. Her naïveté leads her to believe that he will one day return to sweep her off her feet. The story ends, with her killing herself at eighteen before she’d even had a chance live.  All in all, slightly problematic.

On a brighter  note, here is a picture of me at the Met Opera.
