The quote I received was “original paintings are silent and still in a sense that information never is,” by John Berger. Pictures can portray more than any amount of words, perhaps because of their room for interpretation. I chose a picture in the museum that had a short description of an immigrant man saying that “It took me 16 years to get a street vendor license.” True, this is astonishing and shows much determination. Yet the picture of the man speaks volumes. The expression of his face consists of many emotions, while the city lights blurred in the background show all that he has worked for. Or perhaps you would interpret it differently. And that is the beauty of an “original painting”.
