Quote from Sontag: “To avoid interpretation, art may become parody. Or it may become abstract. Or it may become (“merely”) decorative. Or it may become non-art.”
I think the painting below is interesting in the way which Sontag refers to as being unable to interpret. This is because, in this painting in particular, the audience doesn’t know whether to interpret the girl near the window, the woman imitating the girl near the window, or both at the same time. I think that the painting best resembles a “parody.” The onlooker is perpetually confused on the focus or the rationale of this painting, which just may be the beauty that the artist is touching on. The ability to confuse in a unique way reinforces the creative element that defines art. Additionally, Sontag’s idea of “non-art” is also present as she decides to draw something as simple as the actions that the two subjects take: one is just looking out the window, while another is simply trying to experience the same vivid imagery, which isn’t even fully present.
