Twice within the same week. Today is Friday. Expecting more people because weekend is near. Going with partner to take pictures and get a sense of the atmosphere of the area.
(During)
Around Court St residency is quite peaceful. Barely anyone on the street. Noticed a mosque that I didn’t know was there before. There is also a Greek Orthodox church in the area which means religious practice is more diverse than racial groups and/or racial identity of the residents.
Interviewed four people:
!@#$: a flower shop worker off of Key Food
Andy: married, a father of two girls
Sergio: a third-generation deli owner
*&^%: a construction worker which we chose to remain anonymous because of the classified information and language used in his interview
According to all the people, the area is pretty diverse despite the fact that we have noticed on repetitive occasion otherwise. When walking down Schemerhorn St, most of the African American population was (non-surprisingly) cloistered around the department of labor building, a goodwill store and food pantry funded by NYS. Once that was gone, more glamorous store fronts again were found before we hit Flatbush Extension which was very crowded.
(Junior’s)
I haven’t been to Junior’s in years and I forgot how homey the atmosphere was. The workers were very friendly and prompt in helping and rearranging the area based on the amount of guests they were receiving. Omayra ordered a slice of traditional cheesecake and I ordered a double fudge-layered chocolate cake slice. Five stars out of five stars from the both of us rating both the food and the service. There was an altercation between two Junior’s customers that was disarmed swiftly and efficiently which didn’t ruin or alter in any way the atmosphere of the place. That is a big accomplishment.
Next step: interviewing again high-rise building residents. Compare and contrast expenses and how they feel about the area
(What is the future of Downtown and hoe has it changed from the past apart from what Sergio said?)
