Staring at Stairs

IDC

The first thing I noticed when I walked down the stairs of the Rox Gallery was the piece shown above. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the background of it was a mirror and it reflected the stairs behind me. What caught my attention was not just the piece itself, but also the actual placement of it. In the picture, it shows a bunch of women standing on reflective, mirror panels that create a sort of floating-in-air sensation. It shows the women heading towards a general direction — up. Now this is where the reflection really played a big part in making me notice this piece at all. It made it look like the women were trying to ascend up towards the light at the head of the stairs. This made me wonder if the picture was placed in front of the stairs on purpose or perhaps it was a creative coincidence.

    Hi Wendy,

I really liked you observation of the stairs and the fact you captured that in the photo you posted. I did not notice that when I looked at this myself. All the people look like they are floating to the opening at the top of the stairs, kind of like a stairway to heaven. Personally, I think that would be an awesome title, even if it is a song title. I wonder if this work is supposed to symbolize something with the staircase or without.

I do want to know whether it was the genius of the artist to place a work to reflect the stairs, or is this one of the accidental geniuses in art.

    Awesome post,
    Alex

I was interested in this photograph too and I think it was strategically placed at the bottom of the steps. It has that deja vu effect when you reach it. You almost feel like the artist is trying to send you a message but I had trouble trying to figure it out. The photo reminded me of a fashion show and since everybody looked robotic, it played into that stereotype of viewing beauty a specific way.

I didn’t even notice the steps when I saw this piece in the gallery but thank you for pointing it out! I have to rethink my original reaction to the photograph now.
