imovie review

Hey everyone,

Below is a worksheet from the media arts workshop in case you need a quick review. Good luck, and email any questions/issues that come up!

PART 1: AUDIO – 15-20 minutes at most

  1. First, you will need your audio file which can be found at: http://eportfolios.macaulay.cuny.edu/mediaarts/recorder-listings/
  2. Once you have listened to your audio files and have chosen one to use in your video, open GarageBand on your MacBook
  3. Create a New Project à Voice and assign your project a name and location to save it.
  4. Drag and Drop the audio file into the space for the track (it doesn’t matter if it’s “male” or “female” track)
  5. Edit the audio as necessary.

If you wish to edit out a long gap in speaking you will split the track by putting the cursor at the beginning of the section you wish to delete, and selecting edit à split or by using the keystroke +T then doing the same at the end of the section you wish to delete. Once the section is isolated, make sure it is selected and hit delete.  Slide the two sections back together.

  1. When you are done editing, go to share à export song to disk. Specify a location you can easily find.

Part 2 – Video

  1. Now you will need the audio file you just edited, as well as your images.  Open up iMovie.
    1. Create a New Project
    2. Drag and Drop the image file into the project.  It will create it as a “clip” of just a few seconds in length.  Change that length to longer than the length of the audio by resting your cursor over the image in the project, and clicking the down arrow on the editor that appears. Select Clip Adjustments from the dropdown menu.  (See image below)
    3. Drag and Drop the audio file you created in GarageBand onto the clip itself. Make sure the beginning of the clip matches the beginning of the image.
    4. Edit your movie:

To create a Ken Burns “panning” effect, you will need to split the clip at the beginning and end of the section where you want it to pan by “isolating” that section using the “split clip” command (use a secondary click and select split clip, or use the keystroke shortcut command+shift+s) at the beginning and end of that section. As you did above, rest your cursor over that section, click the down arrow, and select Cropping, Ken Burns, and Rotation.

To add in another image that you perhaps refer to in your audio, split the clip where you wish to add it, drag and drop the image in, and adjust the length, Ken Burns, etc.

  1. When your movie is ready:

Go to Share à Export and save as a Medium-Sized movie. This process can take about 20 minutes. (Do NOT use Export Using Quicktime!)

Part 3 – Posting your project to the Media Arts eportfolio

  1. Once your movie is done, go to http://eportfolios.macaulay.cuny.edu/mediaarts
  2. On the home page, please fill in the form and upload your movie.  You will be asked to provide the names of your group members, a brief description and/or reflection of your video, and to assign tags to your post (for tags, consider using the artist’s name, the name of the work of art, or anything else that you wish to use that relates to your project).
