Complexions

Complexions was the first ballet performance I’ve ever been to! I was really excited! I always wondered how a ballet show would be like. I was really curious how it would turn out from seeing the videos in class. I wondered if it was going to be similar to the videos. I was surprised how strict they would be that we couldn’t even take pictures. I didn’t know that they would be that strict. I really liked how I was in the front though.

As the music started, I was surprised by the outfits. It was tight clothing that I could see the muscles of the dancers. I was glad we went over some of the performances in class. I realized that as they danced, their muscles were emphasized and I realized that it was part of the dance. That was one of the main points. I was interested in the second part of the performance which was the one with no music. I felt like it was tap dancing. Also, the parts when they stomped their feet were cool. I never knew ballet could be like this.

My favorite part was the last part. I really like how they wore clothing that people would wear these days. Also, they had music with lyrics. I didn’t know if that was allowed but I was excited. The upbeat music with the dance and lyrics was perfect. I clapped along to the dance. It was fun to watch and it told a story as the dancers danced to the lyrics.

I’ve noticed or felt that the parts all had to do something with love. Maybe, I was the only one who felt like that. Also, I really loved the passion of all the dancers. They danced and acted and their face showed how much they loved what they were doing. I even felt that their sweat helped with their dancing as they showed their passion. It was a realyl interesting performance and I’m grateful that I had a chance to see it.

The Holidays

Yay! The holidays are coming! When I think of the holidays, I think of all the decorations. Whatever holiday it is, every holiday has an art to it. Have you guys ever thought of that before? Especially around Christmas, I feel that there’s art is everywhere. For example, this sculpture is decorated for the holidays. Also, the tree for the Rockefeller Center went up. The lights, the angels, they’re all art. The decorations people put up for the holidays are art. They express the holiday spirit. The art is what lifts the people’s spirit to get them into the holiday spirit. The art of decorations have a strong influence towards the people. I know it does to me. It makes me happy as I spend it with the people I love.

How about you guys? Don’t you feel happy looking at the holiday decorations?

The Beauty of the Night

I’ve noticed that in the night, Manhattan has much more beauty. For example, this Empire State Building. Honestly, during the day, I just look up and say, “Wow it’s the tallest building here in Manhattan.” I didn’t see the beauty of it except how long it took to build the building. However, when I was walking down the street, I was amazed. The different fluorescent colors at night made a real difference. The tallest building was shining so brightly. It looked like a piece of art in 3D form. It was really cool to see this. I wonder why they choice to light these specific colors. Then I thought that it was very patriotic since the colors are the colors of the American flag. I also remembered when they lit up the Filipino’s colors as well when the Philippines were hit with the Earthquake. The Building delivers a message through the use of its colors and lights. I never came to thinking this until I saw the colors of this building.

What do you guys think about the lights?

Artist Interview: Val Moranto

Hi guy! So I interviewed Val Moranto who is a singer/dancer/actress living in Connecticut. We couldn’t meet up because of her busy schedule. She’s preparing for a gig in NY in December. She was kind enough to do the interview online. I learned a lot about her that I didn’t know. I hope you guys enjoy this and her performance!

The Met-The Korean Exhibition- Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom

So the Whitney Museum was closed on tuesday so we went to the Met Museum instead. At first, I thought that I’ve never been there before, but as I come across some familiar paintings, I remembered that I did come here but I was really little. I didn’t know what to see until I saw the list of exhibitions. The first thing that popped in my eyes was the Korean exhibition. I was so excited. I had to see it no matter what. I didn’t want to see anything else. So I dragged some of my friends to come with me to see the exhibition. I was really amazed and was a bit of a surprised. I went to the exhibition, knowing what I’ll see and expect but I was surprised by the difference of what I had known. I am very familiar with the Korean culture and traditions that I am familiar with the pottery and jewelry of the Korean culture. I also see lots of historical Korean dramas so i thought I knew what to expect. I was surprised by the influences of other cultures it had on the Korean exhibition. I saw a cultural diffusion of Chinese, India, the Byzantine Empire and etc on the different pottery and jewelry. It was really amazing. I didn’t know that it had that much influence on Korea. It was cool to see different parts of cultures diffused into an artwork.

Also, I really liked seeing the different statues of Buddha as well from different kinds to the one I know now. I saw the past statues to present. It was really cool since I’ve seen most of them and seeing them in a museum gave me an amazement sort of feeling. I thought that I should bring my family here as well. I know they’ll love it! Well, except for my little sister. I was really happy that my culture was shown in a museum.

Here are the pictures of the exhibition. Well parts of the exhibition. Hope you guys like it as much as I did!

Martin Luther King. Jr

When I was going to the library for the archive project when I came across this sculpture. I thought it was a really unique sculpture since I never saw anything like it. I was wondering why it was in front of the a high school. It turns out that it’s a memorial sculpture made by William Tarr made by a self-weathering steel. This same steel, which is called the Mayari R. was used for the walls of the schools buildings. When I found this out, I thought that it was really cool. The connection between the sculpture and the school was so amazing! I thought it was a great idea! I mean, who thinks like that? Relating the sculpture to the school. I thought it was terrific.

Have you guys found a sculpture with this kind of connection to its school?

“Fun Home” Review

“Fun Home” was really great to watch! It was sad yet hysterical! The irony of these two were put perfectly together. There are moments when I was about to tear or when I was really sad but then they commented on something funny. It was so weird how my feelings could change from being sad to happy and visa versa so quickly. I did like the play better than the graphic novel. However, reading the graphic novel first was really helpful. I knew what the play was about and had an expectation, which is why I enjoyed it. If I didn’t read the graphic novel first, I would’ve probably been like, “Um…ok why is this so important.”

Reading the graphic novel then seeing the play helped me understand the pain of characters even better than before. I thought it was a great idea for three different actresses to play Allison in three different time periods of her life. The nonlinear plot was well put into a play. I was wondering how the play was going to portray the nonlinear storyline but it was done excellently. It exceeded my expectation. I really enjoyed it and was never was bored throughout the play.

It was a good idea to put in some scenes and not to put some. The scene where the three siblings were advertising about “Fun Home” was cleverly put. Usually, the atmosphere is sad and depressing whenever a topic is related to death. But advertising and singing in the coffin made it a comedy. That was really well put. I really liked how that incorporated tragedy and comedy. I’m glad I saw this play and read the graphic novel beforehand. I enjoyed it a lot. I still remember when a person looked at be funny because I told my friends I enjoyed it. That person, who was a senior, looked at me as if I was crazy. Now I understand the feeling of full meaning of understanding a theater play.

“Delusion” at Rox Gallery

photo

Words like “liar, hypocrite, fraud, hustler, sinister” and all these negative words will indeed hurt a person emotionally which will affect the person externally as well. This stood me out to me the most from the gallery. I understood what this meant painting meant when I looked at it and made me feel sad. I wonder what the artist was thinking and what inspired him to make this. I wonder what incident the artist had. This really shows, “how bodies of thought and people are often reduced to form.”

I feel that artist are usually portrayed this way and been through this at least once in their life, which was the reason why the artist created this painting. Many people have thoughts like this, all negative towards a starting artist. Of course, the artist will be hurt by those mean comments. I feel that this artist used art to express how people viewed the arts of some artists or the artists themselves. This portrays a delusion of the people who make these comments. Artists aren’t liars, hypocrites, frauds, or any other harsh words. I feel that the people who make those comment are deluded which is the reason why the painting was picked to be displayed in this gallery for the concept of delusions.

I felt really bad and it hurts when I think about the artist. The colors give the atmosphere of a sad and a depressing mood. The fact that the white words are on a black background makes the words stand out even more. The words are drawn like tear drops falling from the cheeks. It looks as if the painting itself is crying too by these words. It shows how much words can hurt a person. I understood the pain an artist had to go through or will through in this industry. The hardships and pain they’ll experience at least once throughout their career.

If I feel this sad and gloomy from looking at this painting, I wonder how the artist felt as he made it? I’m pretty sure everyone of us went through an obstacle of facing hateful words as well.

“Speaker Stack Mixed Media” by Kremen Art

photo

While I was at Argo Tea near Baruch today, I saw this photo and it really stood out to me. I was surprised a painting was at a place where tea is being sold. I wonder how that happened. This painting is priced at $250. So I’m assuming the artist is just beginning to go into this business. I wonder why the artist chose a place like Argo Tea to sell her work. I really was attracted to this painting because of the colors and the speakers. I really enjoy music so I saw this as how the speakers are playing all sorts of different musics which is expressed through the different colors. It shows how creative the music can be it’s interpreted differently from people. I like how the speakers have a neutral color. It shows that they’re the basic to letting music be heard. The neutral colors around the colorful colors ironically helps the speakers stand out in the painting. It shows the positiveness music can do. Just looking at this painting makes me feel happy and want to listen to my music.

Did any of you see this painting too? Or seen a painting in a place you never imagined like I did?
